Greetings from the President of the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition (JSSMN2025)
The 62nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition (JSSMN2025), to be held on Thursday, July 3rd and Friday, July 4th, 2025, is fast approaching. As mentioned earlier, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Society, JSSMN, which was founded as the Study Group for Postoperative Metabolism. During this time, medical science and medicine have made great advances, and surgeons now need time to learn new surgical techniques such as endoscopic surgery and acute care surgery. Furthermore, due to the influence of recent work style reforms, doctors no longer have enough time to learn and practice general knowledge of surgery, such as perioperative management. On the other hand, team medical care such as nutritional support team (NST) has been established at each facility, and the knowledge level of medical staff, who are specialists in metabolism and nutrition, has improved significantly. However, when treating patients, it is necessary for all professions to properly share necessary information and provide team medical care, and doctors must take leadership roles. In recent years, new knowledge of metabolism and nutrition that can affect the outcome of cancer treatment has also been gained. Therefore, it is time for both doctors and medical staff to learn about metabolic nutrition. As the theme of JSSMN2025 is “Being Guided, Learning, and Teaching: To Pass on Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition”, we have set up special sessions that will allow you to explain why you should learn about surgical metabolism and nutrition, what the significance of learning is, and why learning is fun. In addition, special lectures and educational lectures by the experts who have been active in their respective fields will provide hints for “Being Guided, Learning, and Teaching”, and many interesting new findings are scheduled to be presented and discussed in JSSMN2025. We hope that the results of this academic conference JSSMN2025 will be a milestone for our society JSSMN, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and will lead to new progress from next year onwards.
From 2023, the JSSMN academic conference will be held every three years jointly with the Asian Society of Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition (ASSMN), and next year, the conference will be held jointly in Osaka, with Professor Masaki Kaibori as the president. However, this year, despite the fact that the conference is not jointly held, we received more than 30 applications from overseas for presentation in the International Session. However, due to time constraints, it is not possible to present all of the submitted papers. In addition, at the meeting of Korean Society of Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition (KSSMN) held in Korea in March this year (KSSMN2025), the intention to better understand the activities of each other’s academic organizations was confirmed, and I introduced JSSMN. In turn, at JSSMN 2025, KSSMN President Seung-Wan Ryu will give a lecture on KSSMN in the Plenary Lecture, and three speakers each will present their latest research results in the JSSMN-KSSMN Joint Session. In addition, more KSSMN members than ever before are expected to join JSSMN2025, so we hope that academic and personal exchanges with overseas researchers will progress. For this reason, we have decided to ask that slides for selected presentations be written in English at JSSMN2025, and it will allow overseas participants to see the results of research in Japan.
In addition, at the same venue on the first day (July 3rd, 2025), the 31st Annual Conference on Cytokine Research in Surgery and Critical Care will be held as usual, and the 12th Seminar on Nutritional Therapy for Gastroenterological Cancer will be held in the evening, so there will be plenty of opportunities to learn about surgical metabolism and nutrition. Since we are planning to hold a small social gathering for all participants, we hope that JSSMN2025 will be a place for learning and striking up friendship for all participants.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the presenters and chairpersons, as well as the staff of the Chiba Cancer Center, Shunkosha and other related parties who cooperated in the operation of the event, and the companies that provided us with great support for the holding of JSSMN2025. We look forward to your continued support and meeting many of you in Tokyo.
June, 2025
We are pleased to announce that the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition (JSSMN2025) will be held in Tokyo on July 3-4, 2025.
This society, originally established in 1965 as the Study Group for Postoperative Metabolism and was renamed the Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition (JSSMN) in 1981. In 2025, JSSMN will celebrate its 60th anniversary. With such a rich history and tradition, JSSMN has developed as a forum for academic discussions in this specialized field. I am deeply grateful to the officers and all members of JSSMN for giving me the opportunity to serve as congress president of the annual meeting in this landmark year. To date, four professors from my home department, the Department of Surgery II (currently, the Department of Frontier Surgery / Esophago-Gastrointestinal Surgery), Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, have held annual meetings of JSSMN: the 21st in 1984 chaired by Professor Hiroshi Sato, the 33rd in 1996 chaired by Professor Shohei Ogoshi (Department of Surgery II, Kochi Medical School), the 38th in 2001 chaired by Professor Hiroyuki Hirasawa (Department of Emergency Medicine, Chiba University), and the 49th in 2012 chaired by Professor Shigeto Oda (Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Chiba University). Although I am far behind the great predecessors who have contributed to the development of JSSMN, as a member of this department, I am deeply honored to undertake this important role and feel a profound sense of duty.
I graduated from Chiba University School of Medicine in 1985, entered the Department of Surgery II, and studied under the guidance of Professors Sadahito Usui and Akio Sakamoto in the Biochemistry Laboratory founded by Professor Shohei Ogoshi. The first national conference at which I presented my work was the 25th annual meeting of JSSMN in 1988 (chaired by Professor Osahiko Abe). In those days, discussions involved all speakers ascending the stage in each session to debate, and frankly, it was a challenging time for me. However, I was“guided” and encouraged by my seniors at that time, which became a source of strength, I could enjoy “learning” about surgical metabolism and nutrition with many colleagues thereafter. I have been involved for a long time in the educational seminars that began in 2010, as described in the History of Our Society section of the society’s recently revamped website, and after being appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014, I was entrusted with the task of “teaching” as the Chairman of the Education Committee of JSSMN, succeeding Professor Shigeto Oda. These experiences have made me realize the need to convey to many medical doctors the importance of general knowledge and research of surgery and emergency medicine. Moreover, team-based medical care has also become essential in this field, requiring not only doctors but also dentists and various medical staff to learn about metabolism and nutrition. Therefore, the theme of this memorial year’s meeting of JSSMN has been set as “Being Guided, Learning, and Teaching: To Pass on Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition”, with the aim of making this event a platform where doctors, dentists and medical staff at all stages of their careers can contemplate the future transmission of knowledge for surgical metabolism and nutrition. We would like to invite you to present your clinical experiences and research results from various fields for vibrant discussions.
The venue for the 62nd annual meeting, JSSMN2025, will be Schönbach-Sabo in Tokyo, the same venue as the 60th in 2023. We will do our best to prepare for an enjoyable and meaningful meeting for all participants. As usual, the 31st Annual Conference on Cytokine Research in Surgery and Critical Care will be held on July 3 at the same venue, which is easily accessible from all over Japan. We look forward to seeing as many as possible of you in Tokyo.
